I read once that no one ever compliments you on the quality of your excuses (can't remember source).
Excuses might buy a little time (maybe) but excuses never move you closer to the prize or lift the impression others have of you.

At West Point, cadets are taught on Day One that there are only four possible responses to a "correction": Yes, sir; No, sir; NO EXCUSE, SIR; and Sir, I do not understand.
